Can landscape metrics be calculated via continuous variables?

Dear Kevin,
I calculated five landscape metrics, namely, the division index, edge density, landscape shape index, patch density, and Shannon's evenness index, through the moving window (5 km × 5 km) using Fragstat. The variable used in this calculation was continuous. However, I noted that the variables mostly used in landscape metric calculation are categorial. Whether can the continuous variable be applied in Fragstat?  How to explain the results from the continuous variable? Thank you!

Tony

The current version of Fragstats only works on categorical variables (coded as integers). Surface metrics for continuous data has not yet been implemented in Fragstats. We have plans to do so but as this effort has not been supported financially it always takes a back burner and keeps getting delayed. Very sorry for that.
